140journos, a civil disobedience. By the influence of the Internet and the other digital technologies, not only the quality of the content producers, but also the habits of the news collecting have started to become diversified. At the level achieved so far, only with a mobile device that has an Internet access, one can share news instantly and rapidly, individuals and communities can access and release news without any need for the mainstream media. As in the cases of mass movements such as Arab Spring and Occupy, the monopoly of the maistream media can be broken down. 140journos is a counter media movement that advocates free journalism as a reaction to the concept of filtered and censored news reporting of the traditional media. 140journos, which started live news reporting based on Twitter on January 19, 2012, has released fast and impartial news content to its followers through the events not covered enough and physically observed by the mainstream media. They have taken the pulse of the events through live broadcasting and photographs as well as the interviews made on the scene. It was considered as the examplary practice of citizen journalism in Turkey by many academicians, activists and artists. We have decided to publicize and anonymize the broadcast having been conducted so far together with the voluntary reporters based on Twitter by releasing 140journos’s smartphone and tablet computer application to the use of the followers. We have aimed at supporting the objective news reporting and the right to access impartial news mentioned in the United Nations Human Rights Convention. Therefore, the 140journos movement has attempted to spread the citizen journalism across Turkey. The 140journos movement has targetted to fundamentally transform the media atmosphere raising social awareness through informing every society sector of any independent, unfiltered and rapid news by means of its mirrorlike objective approach. To achieve this target, 140journos will attempt to take advantage of the crowdfunding system in order to develop a citizen journalism application to be downloaded into all the smartphones and tablet computers free of charge.
The mobile application being developed will help 140jurnos’s original dream of setting up a publically adopted and financed news agency to come true by terminating the unavoidable dependency on the mainstream media, which is directed by the corporate advertisers’ demands, turning a deaf ear to the social problems and events and already announcing its collapse due to their unethical approaces. The fact that the news releasing agency is a big holding or institution and the news follower has turned out to be a passive consumer has been losing its functionality. Twitter, whose influence has recently been increasing, has formed a suitable model for disseminating short and easily consumed content. Starting out with this model, 140journos has been developing a mobile application and an additional website appropriate for the news receiving habits of the new generation. In addition to the 140-character long entries provided by Twitter, the new applicaiton will facilitate the spreading of the individually collected content having the news quality, which also includes the audio and video recording feature. Despite the fact that the intitutionalized journalism whose news can hardly be corrected is difficult and expensive, citizen journalism has been giving the privilage of being the first to access the news impartially. In order to prevent the possible news pollution, this newest application of 140journos will be providing the news receivers with the news coming from the reporters whose locations are already checked through the mobile smartphones. Furthermore, the users inhabiting or walking around the news scene will have the opportunity to witness the scene and to correct, change and update any part of the news as in the example of the content creation in Wiki model.
As for what 140journos means, the 140 reference in our name reflects the 140 character limit of Twitter posts. One important point we want to draw your attention to is that the only thing that is limited in this movement is the number of character in a tweet. Journalism, as it is, is truly illimitable.
